Sydney
Sydney was diagnosed with pauciarticular arthritis, also know as JRA, when she was two years old. Sydney's arthritis is a common form in young children. It is isolated to her right knee. Periodic flare ups cause pain, stiffness, swelling and decreased mobility.
Cortisone injections and daily medication allow her to maintain normal activity. Sydney understands as much about arthritis as a 3 year old can. She says that her leg sometimes "feels sad" and "it doesn't work too well." She recognizes that on some days she cannot run and jump like other kids.
On a rainy day several months ago, a beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky. Sydney was captivated by it. The next time it rained she watched patiently out the window for the rainbow. We explained to her that rainbows are special and that she was very lucky to see one, but not every rainy day will bring a rainbow. Now on a rainy day she will say with the optimism of a 3 year old, "I am hoping today is my lucky day. I want to see that rainbow."
We are participating in the Arthritis Walk to raise awareness and fund research to find a cure. We are walking in Sydney's honor and the name of our team is Rainbows for Sydney. Please help support this cause so that kids like Sydney can be lucky enough to have many carefree tomorrows filled with rainbows and pain-free happiness.
