My Daughter Sydney

Arthritis has become an important focus for my family. My 3 year old daughter Sydney was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) last year. We quickly learned that arthritis can strike at any age. Over 300,000 kids have some form of arthritis.

JRA, also known as pauciarticular arthritis, is a common form of arthritis in young children. It is isolated to Sydney's right knee. Periodic flare ups cause pain, stiffness, swelling and decreased mobility.

Cortisone injections and daily medication allow her to maintain normal activity. Sydney understands as much about arthritis as a 3 year old can. She says that her leg sometimes "feels sad" and "it doesn't work too well." She recognizes that on some days she cannot run and jump like other kids.

It is absolutely heart breaking for us to see Sydney in pain. I am fighting for a cure on Sydney's behalf and for the many others who are stricken with this painful disease.

46 million Americans have arthritis(1 in 5 adults). Chances are either you or someone you know is touched by arthritis. It is time to raise awareness and funding for better treatments and a cure.
